Brandenburg being the federal state encompassing Berlin belongs to the German Capital region. The vibrant capital Berlin is located right in the center. Brandenburg represents the „green lung“ and with its 11 nature parks, 3 biosphere reserves, a national park as well as a UNESCO world heritage sight it offers a unique natural and cultural landscape.
Moreover Brandenburg is one of the most attractive German regions for cycling and hiking (11.600 km of signposted cycle tracks and 2000 km of marked foothpaths). It inspires with diverse cultural offers such as the Prussian cultural heritage and with huge water landscapes ideal for maximum relaxation (3000 lakes, 33.00 km of running waters, 18 thermal spas and 8 health resorts).
Tourism in Brandenburg has a strong impact on the regional economy. The tourist industry alone employs more than 60.000 people in more than 10.000 enterprises. Not least because of their daily commitment, their very personal contribution and their entrepreneurial spirit the success story continues.
A lot has happened since the nineties. With 27,63 million overnight stays and 92,3 million day trips the figures speak for a very positive economic development. In 2014 the tourist sector in Brandenburg generated an annual turnover of 4,3 billion Euro. It has become evident that the tourist industry does not only play a decisive role in the regional economy but also in structural policy issues by contributing remarkably to the development of rural areas.

Medical and health tourism in the German Capital region
With more than 30 million overnight stays in 2015 Berlin proves to be a real visitor magnet in the heart of Europe. The city captivates with countless cultural activities, historical locations, trendy neighbourhoods and numerous musical and sports events. Having said that, however, Berlin enjoys a high standing on international scale in a different sector as well - more and more guests visit the German Capital to recover or rather to stay healthy.
Berlin‘s repuation as a hot spot for health tourism traces back to a 300 year old tradition of health and research centres. Nobel prices winners such as Rudolf Virchow or Rober Koch were among the prestigious researchers that contributed to the long lasting success story. With 80 hospitals, 8.7000 employed doctors and 814.000 patients the German Capital Region is a place with a truly state-of-the-art medicine.
Health and spa tourism represent an integral part of the health region Berlin-Brandenburg and becomes increasingly important. In order to stay competitive synergies have to be created between the national and international tourism industry, the healthcare industries and other relevant sectors. Therefore an intelligent interlinkage is particularly relevant. The Health Excellence Inititative follows this approach and is thus an important cooperation partner for the international Matchmaking Event during ITB Berlin 2017.
A spirit of innovation is required more than ever!
We look forward to welcoming you at the international Matchmaking Event 2017!
