Horizon 2020 – the EU’s new Research and Innovation framework– is likely to be worth as much as £70bn over the period 2014-20. Discussion of the detail is still under way, but it is clear that major new resources will be devoted to “space”, and that other headings of the programme, covering topics like climate change, will also provide funding opportunities for the UK space sector. The UK was very successful in securing funding for space research in the final year of the FP7. To build on this success, it will be essential to understand what Horizon 2020 means for the UK space sector, and to explore how new players can engage. The UK Space Agency, and a number of UK and European partners, are to sponsoring a series of regional workshops.
