The Plastics and Chemistry Cluster in
the German Capital Region

With its 600 companies and 12,500 employees, the Plastics and Chemistry Cluster is a strong mainstay of industry in the State of Brandenburg.

The share of the Brandenburg plastics and chemical industry in the state's trade and commerce was a stable 11 percent in 2012.

A sales increase of more than 10 percent compared to 2010 to more than three billion euro in 2011 and a presence throughout the state make this cluster an above-average driver of growth in the manufacturing industry and a stabilising factor in the State of Brandenburg.

Every eighth employee works in this industry, every seventh euro of income is earned in the chemical and plastics industry.

There is hardly another industry that is highly interlinked with other branches of industry in Brandenburg. Especially as a supplier of many parent products, the plastics and chemical industry has a key role in the innovative development of such industries as medical engineering/pharmaceuticals, energy technology, information and communications technology, optics, automotive engineering and many others.

Brandenburg products such as fibres, films, tyres, components for household appliances and windmills, basic polyurethane products, plant protection products, water-based varnishes and engineering plastics make the German capital region known beyond the borders of the state.

Big Companies and SMEs

The chemical parks in Schwedt/Oder, Premnitz, Guben, and Schwarzheide feature big, structure-determining enterprises that shape the profile of the cluster. The region's chemical businesses are among the leaders in their industry in Europe, such as PCK Refinery in Schwedt (mineral oil processing), BASF in Schwarzheide, or Atotech in Neuruppin, and the big producers of synthetic fibres, Trevira in Guben and Märkische Faser in Premnitz.

Rubber and plastic products are mainly manufactured in small and medium-sized enterprises and cover a wide range of plastics processing. Almost

6,000 employees work in 68 companies (with more than 20 employees).
The cluster core is made up of eight big enterprises that each employs more than 300 workers (statistical information from 2011).

Key Locations

Larger settlements of companies within the Plastics and Chemistry Cluster can be found in Schwarzheide / Lauchhammer, Oranienburg / Velten / Hennigsdorf, Neuruppin, Schwedt, Fürstenwalde, Guben, and Premnitz
The plastics and chemical industries are closely interlinked. Integration is highest at the locations of Schwarzheide, Fürstenwalde, and Oranienburg.

How to Find Companies of the Plastics and
Chemical Industry in Brandenburg

Companies of the plastics and chemical industry typically have specialized material competences that have been compiled in a materials competence database.

You can find suppliers, business or joint venture partners fast and easily in the materials competence database maintained by the Brandenburg Economic Development Board – everything from classic to functional to recycling materials – players in the region and information about their respective areas of competence. This database provides well-structured information on companies, multipliers, research/teaching facilities and funding programmes along the entire value chain – from research to application and recycling.

You can access the Berlin-Brandenburg materials competence database.
