Information events on forthcoming FP7 Space Calls have in the past been organised only after the publication of the official Call document. This year for the first time full information was provided in advance of publication of what will be the last Call under FP7. And for the first time the event was in the UK, hosted by University of Surrey on 20/21 June.

The Space Call comprises the following Areas and topics:

Activity "GMES":
- (Pre-)operational validation of GMES services and products:
- Towards a GMES Climate change service preparatory activities (5 Topics)
- GMES service activities (3 Topics, incl. Downstream services)

Activity "Space Science Foundation":
- Research to support space science and exploration (2 Topics)
- Exploitation of space science and exploration data
- Earth-analogue research preparing for space exploration
- Research to support space transportation and key technologies
- Space critical technologies
- Research into reducing the vulnerability of space assets
- Space-weather events
- Security of space assets from in-orbit collisions mission concepts

Activity "Cross-cutting activities"
- SME specific research
- International cooperation

The draft work programme of the forthcoming Space Call can be found here. It will provide the basis for the Call which is expected to be released on 10 July 2012.

University of Surrey, based in Guildford South of London is an ideal venue. The conference facilities are excellent and it is well connected by rail and easily reached from Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports and from the Eurostar rail terminal. The local area represents an important concentration of space activity. University of Surrey has a strong track record in EU space research, and leading space organisations are near neighbours, notably Surrey Satellite Technology (now a subsidiary of Astrium, and originating from academic work at Surrey).
